(2008-06-18) Zijwieltjes voor vrijheid: Wine 1.0
"Natuurlijk zou het voor gebruikers interessanter zijn om zelfstandig te kunnen rijden, zonder afhankelijk te zijn van zijwieltjes. Maar toch zorgen die wieltjes ervoor dat de kinderen niet vallen, wat de vrijheid van zowel de ouders als de kinderen vergroot. (2008-05-27) GPL-Violations.org en FSFE's Freedom Task Force gaan nauwer samenwerken
"Juridisch is het klaar en duidelijk dat personen die Vrije Software verdelen zich ook aan de licentie moeten houden. GPL-Violations.org en de FTF bouwen samen aan een juridische structuur die daar ondersteuning voor moet bieden en tevens de licenties doet naleven", zegt Harald Welte. (2008-04-02) De FSFE is bezorgd over de kwaliteit van het standaardisatieproces
"Technisch gesproken is de toestand van IS29500 bedroevend," zegt Marko Milenovic, lid van het Servische team van de FSFE die deel uitmaakt van de Servische technisch commissie voor DIS29500. "Het grootste deel ervan is technische proza van lage kwaliteit waarin zelfs de genormeerde terminologie, die gevraagd wordt in de ISO/IEC richtlijnen, niet gerespecteerd wordt. Er wordt ons gevraagd om te wachten op het onderhoudsproces om MS-OOXML bruikbaar te maken. Dat ISO een specificatie goedkeurt waarvan ze zelf weet dat die niet functioneel is, is ontgoochelend." (2008-03-06) Petitie voor Open Standaarden in het Europees Parlement
Op het moment dat de EU-commissie onderzoek doet naar het anti-competitieve gedrag van één van de dominante spelers in de markt, verplicht het Europees Parlement de burgers en zelfs haar eigen parlementsleden om die specifieke software te gebruiken. OpenForum Europe, de European Software Market Association en de Free Software Foundation Europe lanceerden vandaag een petitie om aan het EP te vragen om Open Standaarden te gebruiken zodat alle burgers kunnen deelnemen aan het democratisch proces. (2008-03-05) FSFE achtergrondinformatie: Interoperabiliteitsproblemen met MS-OOXML
De FSFE heeft achtergrondinformatie over interoperabiliteitsproblemen veroorzaakt door het Microsoft Office OpenXML formaat. "De voorgestelde MS-OXML/DIS29500 specificaties geven aanleiding tot ernstige technische en juridische bezwaren. Dit document legt aan de hand van drie voorbeelden uit hoe de voorgestelde MS-OOXML specificaties en de praktische toepassing ervan in MS Office 2007 de interoperabiliteit hinderen, je afhankelijkheid van één bepaalde verkoper verhogen en hoe dat leidt tot een verstoorde markt." (2008-03-01) Google helpt FSFE's FTF bij het organiseren van opleidingen, vertegenwoordiging op conferenties en bij het vertalen van hun documenten.
"De Freedom Task Force werkt aan een efficiënte juridische infrastructuur voor Vrije Software in Europa. (2008-02-28) FSFE vraagt Microsoft om zijn interoperabiliteitsinformatie zonder beperkingen vrij te geven
De Europese Commissie gaf Microsoft een boete van 899 miljoen Euro voor anti-competitief gedrag door de toegang tot zijn interoperabiliteitsinformatie te beperken. "Microsoft is het laatste bedrijf dat nog actief promotie maakt voor het gebruik van softwarepatenten om interoperabiliteit te beperken. Zo'n gedrag kan niet meer getolereerd worden in onze internetmaatschappij waar alle componenten, ongeacht hun oorsprong, naadloos moeten kunnen samenwerken", zegt Georg Greve, voorzitter van de Free Software Foundation Europe. (2008-02-22) Microsofts toezeggingen maken geen verschil voor zijn belangrijkste concurrenten
Microsoft verspreidde gisteren een persbericht waarin ze hun voornemen bekend maakten om interoperabiliteitsinformatie bekend te maken voor hun vlaggeschipproducten. Dit persbericht bevatte eigenlijk weinig echt nieuws. Microsoft heeft de afgelopen jaren al verschillende gelijkaardige voornemens bekend gemaakt en telkens bleken ze de interoperabilieteit eerder te bemoeilijken dan te verbeteren. (2008-02-20) 26 maart: Een wereldwijde actiedag voor het vrij maken van documenten
De Document Freedom Day (DFD) is een werelddag voor het vrij maken van documenten met acties vanuit de basis voor de promotie van Vrije Documentformaten en Open Standaarden in het algemeen. De DFD is een initiatief van, en wordt gesteund door, een groep van organisaties en bedrijven. De Free Software Foundation Europe, ODF Alliance, OpenForum Europe, IBM, Red Hat en Sun Microsystems, Inc. behoren, naast nog andere organisaties, tot de groep van initiatiefnemers. Op 26 maart 2008, zal de Document Freedom Day een wereldwijde ontmoetingsplaats zijn voor het vrij maken van documenten en voor Open Standaarden. [Lees meer...]

(2008-02-18) FSFE Achtergrondinformatie: DIS-29500 - Al verworpen voor men het gebruikt?
Toen ECMA het MS-OOXML-formaat aan ISO voorlegde als ECMA-376 voor een versnelde goedkeuring (fast-track), hebben veel landen de kritiek gegeven dat de standaard overlapt met de bestaande ISO-standaard ISO/IEC 26300:2006, het Open Document Format (ODF). (2008-01-18) NLnet blijft FSFE's Freedom Task Force steunen
FSFE's Freedom Task Force werd in november 2006 gelanceerd om individuen, projecten en bedrijven te helpen met Vrije Softwarelicentiëring. De opstartfase van de FTF werd mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van de Nederlandse filantropische organisatie "stichting NLnet". Dankzij de steun van NLnet kreeg de FTF de mogelijkheid om cursussen te geven en advies te verstrekken. We konden daardoor ook in samenwerking met gpl-violations.org licentieovertredingen in de Europese regio aanpakken. De FTF heeft ook netwerken opgericht van juridische en technische specialisten om een samenwerking te organiseren tussen advocaten, projecten en bedrijven die vragen hebben over licenties. Vandaag, na meer dan twaalf maanden ononderbroken groei, geeft MLnet voor een tweede keer financiële steun aan dit innovatief juridisch project. [Lees meer...]

(2007-12-21) De FSFE staat achter een nieuwe antitrustonderzoek tegen Microsoft
"Men moet van Microsoft op een onverholen, volledige en nauwgezette wijze een volledige implementatie van de vrije en open industriestandaarden eisen", dit is de boodschap van de brief van de Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) aan de Europese commissaris voor concurrentie Neelie Kroes. Om dit doel te bereiken biedt de FSFE haar steun aan bij een mogelijk antitrustonderzoek gebaseerd op een klacht van Opera Software tegen Microsoft. (2007-12-20) EU antitrustzaak is beëindigd: Samba ontvangt informatie over interoperabiliteit
Eén rechtszaak is beëindigd en de interoperabiliteit heeft gewonnen. Het Gerecht van de Europese Gemeenschappen heeft duidelijk gemaakt dat informatie met betrekking tot interoperabiliteit niet geheim mag worden gehouden. De overeenkomst maakt duidelijk dat het voor Microsoft onmogelijk geworden was om interoperabiliteit in dit domein nog langer te bemoeilijken. "Leveranciersafhankelijkheid is een van de grootste problemen geworden bij IT-beslissingen in het algemeen en bij het invoeren van Vrije Softwareoplossingen in het bijzonder. Het verstoort de markt en ontneemt Vrije Software een eerlijke concurrentie op basis van haar intrinsieke waarden. Eén van de grote problemen was dat veel van deze afhankelijkheden onzichtbaar bleven, voorbeelden hiervan zijn afhankelijkheid van propriëtaire protocollen en de noodzaak om bepaalde documentformaten te kunnen gebruiken. (2007-07-27) De FSFE biedt hulp aan bedrijven, zodat ze in regel blijven met de Vrije Software licentievoorwaarden
De voorwaarden van de GNU GPL-licentie zijn opnieuw voor een Duitse rechtbank als bindend bevonden. Een Duitse rechtbank oordeelde dat Skype zijn verplichtingen als verdeler niet nakwam. FSFE's gastartikel op Heise.de: "Convertie tussen Microsofts's Office OpenXML-formaat (MS-OOXML) en het producent-onafhankelijke Open Document Formaat (ODF), wordt door Microsoft en haar partners voorgesteld als de oplossing voor het probleem dat Microsoft nu creëert door een formaat op de markt te brengen dat niet compatibel is met de bestaande Open Standaard. Gepubliceerd artikel van Georg Greve en Joachim Jakobs over de noodzaak van Open Standaarden in archieven, en waarom het gebruik van MS-OOXML kan leiden tot gegevensverlies. "Digitale informatie heeft het potentieel in zich om zeer lang bewaard te kunnen worden zonder enig kwaliteitsverlies. Na achttien maanden van openbare consultaties en discussies is versie 3 van de GNU GPL gepubliceerd. Versie 3 is veel universeler, geeft een betere bescherming tegen softwarepatenten, en geeft een grotere garantie aan Vrije Softwaregebruikers dat ze ook aangepaste software op hun computers kunnen installeren en gebruiken. De volgende zes vragen vragen staan in verband met de aanvraag om het ECMA/MS-OOXML-formaat te aanvaarden als IEC/ISO-standaard. (2007-04-23) Het Europees Parlement moet het criminaliseren van softwareproductenten en softwaregebruikers voorkomen.
De FSFE bekritiseert het voorstel voor "de tweede richtlijn voor het afdwingen van "intellectuele Eigendom" (IPRED2), omdat het criminalisering uitsmeert over verschillende rechtsdomeinen, voor zeer vaag omschreven begrippen zoals "poging tot, medeplichtigheid aan of aanzetten tot een inbreuk". De voorgestelde tekst maakt al deze handelingen strafbaar voor zeer uiteenlopende wetgeving waaronder het auteursrecht, het handelsmerk en patentwetgeving. [Lees meer...]

(2007-02-01) De FSFE heeft een nieuw middel om Vrije Softwareprojecten juridisch te versterken
Vandaag heeft de FSFE haar Ficuciary Licence Agreement (FLA) uitgebracht onder de voorwaarden van de GNU Free Documentation Licence (GFDL) en onder de voorwaarden van de Creative Commons Naamsvermelding-GelijkDelen (CC by-sa) licentie. De Fiduciary Licence Agreement (FLA) is een overdracht van het auteursrecht waardoor Vrije Softwareprojecten hun auteursrechten kunnen bundelen bij één organisatie of persoon. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de projecten juridisch beheersbaar blijven. Het stelt projecten in staat om hun auteursrechten over te dragen aan het fiduciaire programma van de FSFE of aan een andere organisatie opgericht door hun team. [Lees meer...]

(2007-01-30) De Vista boodschap: Upgrade naar GNU/Linux NU!
De FSFE ziet een unieke kans: Met het uitbrengen van Vista, zullen gebruikers verplicht moeten overstappen naar een nieuw besturingssysteem, één dat er anders uitziet en anders aanvoelt, het zal een tijdje duren om gewoon te raken aan de nieuwe functionaliteiten. Het OpenSwarm project zal beschermd worden door FSFE's Freedom Task Force (FTF). Shane Coughlan, coördinator van de FTF, legt uit: "De Freedom Task Force is opgericht om de juridische basis van het Vrije Software ecosysteem te versterken. De Fiduciary licence Agreement moet daar ook toe bijdragen. Het stelt projecten in staat op een transparante manier hun auteursrecht te consolideren. In het geval van OpenSwarm, wil de FSFE optreden als juridisch voogd voor het project, zodat de ontwikkelaars zich volledig kunnen focussen op het uitbreiden van hun boeiend ontwikkelplatform." In deze toespraak verklaart Richard Stallman hoe men tot de huidige definitie van Vrije Software is gekomen, welke technische en bestuurlijke keuzes de Vrije Softwarebeweging brachten waar ze nu staat, en wat er moet gebeuren om klaar te staan voor de toekomst. Dankzij zijn 20 jaar ervaring slaagt Stallman erin zijn verhaal boeiend te vertellen.

(2006-11-21) De FSFE wordt de juridische voogd van het Bacula Project
Kern Sibbald, de stichter en hoofdontwikkelaar van de Bacula network backup solution, wees zijn auteursrecht toe aan de FSFE. "Ik wilde het engagement van het Bacula project voor Vrije Software benadrukken", zei Kern. "Bacula is altijd al een community project geweest, wij willen dat consolideren op lange-termijn. Ik ben blij dat de FSFE deze dienst aanbiedt, aangezien het een groot deel van de administratieve lasten van onze schouders neemt, zodat wij ons kunnen focussen op de taak van het programmeren." "Het is ons voornaamste doel ervoor te zorgen dat bedrijven zich al vanaf het begin houden aan de licentie, in plaats van achteraf de overtredingen te moeten bekampen," verteld Mr. Coughlan. (2006-10-03) DRM.info: Informatie over de gevaren van het beheren van het privaat gebruik van media
Een groep van organisaties en auteurs lanceerden vanmorgen DRM.info. Dit initiatief, voorgesteld door de Free Software Foundation Europa (FSFE), wil een gemeenschappelijk informatieplatform over de gevaren van het beheer van digitale beperkingen, Digital Restrictions Management (DRM), aanbieden. (2006-07-12) Commissie aan Microsoft: Interoperabiliteit verhinderen heeft een prijs
De Europese Commissie beboet Microsoft voor 1,5 miljoen Euro per dag met terugwerkende kracht tot 16 december 2005, in totaal 280,5 miljoen Euro. Indien Microsoft zich tegen eind juli 2006 niet in regel stelt kan deze boete verdubbelen. Deze boetes worden opgelegd omdat Microsoft blijft weigeren zich te schikken naar de beslissing van de Europese Commissie om de informatie vrij te geven die nodig is om interoperabiliteit met concurrenten mogelijk te maken. Deze richtlijnen creëren een omgeving waar eerlijke concurrentie mogelijk is. De FSFE steunt de Europese Commissie sinds het begin van de zaak in 2001. [Lees meer...]

(2006-06-13) Details voor de GPLv3 Internationale conferentie online
De derde Internationale GPLv3 Conferentie, die het eerste halve jaar markeert van de conslultatieperiode om de meestgebruikte Vrije Softwarelicentie te herwerken, heeft experten vanuit Europa en de rest van de wereld te gast.
De locatie, het Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), ligt in het hart van de stad. Tijdens dit tweedaagse evenement worden onder andere presentaties gegeven door Richard Stallman, voorzitter FSF, Eben Moglen, voorzitter van het Software Freedom Law Center, Georg Greve, voorzitter van de FSF Europa en Harald Welte, oprichter van de gpl-violations.org. De conferentie vindt plaats in Barcelona, Spanje, de juiste plaats wordt zo vlug mogelijk bekendgemaakt. In januari werd de één jaar durende consultatieperiode voor het aanpassen van de General Public License gestart. Carlo Piana, advocaat voor de Free Software Foundation Europa in deze zaak, geeft meer uitleg:"Hun tussenkomsten maakten het duidelijk dat de "blauwe bel" alleen bestaat in de pleidooien van hun advocaten.
